“Alien 3” / 「エイリアン3」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1992, Sigourney Weaver / David Fincher, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) C264
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1992 for the first Japanese release of Alien 3 (エイリアン3), David Fincher’s dark science-fiction horror sequel starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley.
The third chapter in the original Alien cycle, Alien 3 marked a radical shift in tone from the industrial terror of Alien and the military action-horror of Aliens. Set on the prison planet Fiorina “Fury” 161, the film brought the series into a harsher, more fatalistic register: stripped-down, claustrophobic, religious, and visually severe.
Film background
Released in 1992, Alien 3 follows Ellen Ripley after the crash of the Sulaco escape vessel on a remote penal colony inhabited by male prisoners. With no weapons, no military backup, and a new xenomorph threat emerging inside the facility, Ripley must confront both the alien creature and the terrible consequences of her own survival.
The film is also significant as the feature directorial debut of David Fincher, who would later become one of the major American directors of his generation. Despite its famously difficult production history, Alien 3 has since gained substantial critical and collector interest for its bleak atmosphere, visual ambition, and uncompromising tone.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a powerful cosmic-horror composition centred on Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, shown with her iconic shaved head, backlit by an intense amber glow against the darkness of space.
Behind her, the poster layers several ominous visual elements: a total solar eclipse burning at left, the industrial structures of the penal colony at right, and the barely visible teeth and jaws of the xenomorph emerging from the shadows above. The image creates a strong sense of isolation, sacrifice, and approaching doom.
At the top, the poster presents a three-part franchise chronology:
「1979年、人類はエイリアンと遭遇。」
“1979: humanity encountered the Alien.”
「1986年、それは永遠に去った。」
“1986: it was gone forever.”
「1992年、今度は人類が危ない。」
“1992: this time, humanity is in danger.”
Above the title appears the ominous line:
「あいつが戻って来た。」
“It has returned.”
The Japanese title エイリアン3 dominates the lower section in huge red lettering. Particularly striking is the way the title characters contain small photographic windows from the film, giving the typography a cinematic, fragmented quality. The blue English ALIEN³ logo appears at lower right, while the bottom credit block identifies the film as a 20th Century Fox / Brandywine production and a David Fincher film.
Collector significance
This is a highly desirable Japanese poster for collectors of Alien, Sigourney Weaver, David Fincher, and early-1990s science-fiction horror. Its appeal lies in its strong Japanese theatrical design, bold typography, and the dramatic central image of Ripley, which perfectly captures the film’s darker and more fatalistic identity.
Japanese B2 posters for major science-fiction films of this period are increasingly sought after, and this example is especially displayable thanks to its deep blacks, glowing amber highlights, and intense franchise imagery.
