Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for American Graffiti / 「アメリカン・グラフィティ」, George Lucas’s landmark 1973 coming-of-age film produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

This Japanese release poster is especially desirable because it captures the film’s complete visual world in one vivid composition: hot rods, teenage romance, rock ’n’ roll nostalgia, drag racing, drive-in culture, and early-1960s Americana, all presented through bold Japanese title typography and richly coloured 1970s poster design.

Film background
Directed by George Lucas, American Graffiti follows a group of teenagers over the course of one summer night in 1962, as they cruise the streets, meet friends, chase romance, race cars, and confront the uncertainty of adulthood.

The film became one of the defining American youth films of the 1970s and was a major breakthrough for Lucas before Star Wars. It also features an important ensemble cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, and a young Harrison Ford.

American Graffiti was both a commercial and critical success, celebrated for its nostalgic atmosphere, ensemble structure, period detail, and influential use of popular music. Its soundtrack of early rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop classics became central to the film’s identity and helped revive interest in 1950s and early-1960s oldies culture.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is a superb example of 1970s Japanese commercial film poster design. The composition is dominated by a bright yellow hot rod in the foreground, immediately establishing the film’s world of cruising, car culture, and teenage freedom.

Above the car, the large red Japanese title 「アメリカン・グラフィティ」 fills the upper section, with the English title American Graffiti printed nearby in blue script. The title treatment is bold, playful, and highly period-specific, giving the poster strong display impact.

The central image brings together the film’s key romantic and ensemble elements: a young couple leaning against the car, the teenage group gathered to the right, and a night-road racing image framed in the background. Smaller side illustrations — including a roller-skating waitress, a shouting disc jockey figure, and musical references — reinforce the film’s world of diners, radio, records, and youth culture.

The Japanese copy at the right reads as a strong promotional statement for the film’s generational appeal, presenting American Graffiti as the original youth movie and a vivid portrait of shared adolescence. At lower left, the poster highlights the film’s extensive oldies soundtrack, noting the revival of classic songs through the film.
