“APOCALYPSE NOW” (1979) – ORIGINAL JAPANESE B0 BILLBOARD POSTER Extremely Rare | Massive Format | First Release | 99 × 157 cm
This is an original, first-release Japanese B0 billboard poster for Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now, issued for the film’s initial Nippon Herald campaign in Japan (released theatrically in early 1980).
Printed in monumental B0 size (99 × 157 cm), this billboard-format poster was produced for cinema display and was never intended for public sale—making surviving examples exceptionally scarce. Even more unusually, this piece has remained rolled for decades, which is why it presents in superb, near-mint condition (a rarity for large Japanese billboards, which are typically folded, edge-worn, or storage-marked).
Visually, it is pure late-70s dread: an immense blood-red title band carrying the Japanese release title 「地獄の黙示録」 (“Record of the Apocalypse of Hell”), with the banner text noting the film’s Cannes Grand Prix win and Dolby Stereo presentation—then, beneath, a fever-orange sky of helicopter silhouettes and the unforgettable confrontation of faces: Marlon Brando’s Kurtz in shadowed profile against Martin Sheen’s haunted stare, with the Apocalypse Now logotype slashed across the base like a wound. (The lower credit block shows 日本ヘラルド映画 / Nippon Herald Films, the Japanese distributor.)
Apocalypse Now—inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness—stars Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes (ex aequo, 1979), and went on to win Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound.
