“Back to the Future Part II” (バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー PART2), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1989, Ultra Rare Horizontal B2 Size (73 × 51 cm) Q167

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese horizontal B2 poster printed in 1989 for the first theatrical release of Back to the Future Part II (バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー PART2), the second film in Robert Zemeckis’s legendary time-travel trilogy. Original Japanese posters for the film are highly collectible, and this is an especially desirable rare horizontal variant featuring an unusual still-based design rather than the more commonly seen key art.

Film background
Released in Japan on 9 December 1989, Back to the Future Part II was directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson, and Elisabeth Shue. The film continues the story of Marty McFly and Doc Brown as they travel from 1985 into the future, then into an altered present, before returning once again to 1955 in one of the most complex and inventive sequel structures of 1980s popular cinema.

Produced in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, the film is remembered for its bold future-world design, hoverboards, alternate timelines, self-referential storytelling, and its seamless connection to the events of the first film. It remains one of the most beloved science-fiction adventure sequels of the era.

Poster design
This is a superb and highly unusual Japanese release design. Rather than using the standard illustrated campaign artwork, this variant presents a dramatic full-bleed photographic still of Marty McFly and Doc Brown in a rain-slicked night-time street scene.

Marty stands at left in his classic 1985 outfit — black jacket, jeans, and white Nike sneakers — leaning urgently toward Doc. Opposite him, Doc is shown down on one knee in his long coat, mouth open in a frantic expression, creating a strong sense of confusion, panic, and narrative momentum. The wet pavement, warm streetlights, and blurred background signs give the image a cinematic, atmospheric quality that is very different from the more familiar poster designs for the film.

The lower navy-blue banner contains the Japanese release announcement:

12月9日(土)ロードショー
“Roadshow from Saturday, 9 December”

Below this, the poster credits Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, while the lower-right corner carries the bold orange-and-blue Japanese title logo バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー PART2.

For collectors, this is exactly what makes the sheet so appealing: it is a much scarcer Japanese horizontal B2 with a very different visual identity from the standard release poster.
