“Bean” / 「ビーン」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1998, Rowan Atkinson / Mel Smith, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E275

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Bean / 「ビーン」, printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release in 1998. The film opened theatrically in Japan on 21 March 1998.

Based on the globally popular Mr. Bean character, the film stars Rowan Atkinson and was directed by Mel Smith, with Peter MacNicol and Pamela Reed among the supporting cast.

Film background
Bean sends the famously chaotic Mr. Bean from Britain to Los Angeles, where he is mistaken for an art expert and dispatched to supervise the unveiling of a major painting. Inevitably, his arrival creates escalating disaster, social embarrassment, museum panic, and physical comedy on an international scale.

The film was the first major theatrical outing for the Mr. Bean character, expanding the television phenomenon into a broad, transatlantic comedy built around Atkinson’s silent-era physical timing, awkward expressions, and perfectly controlled absurdity.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is a wonderfully bold late-1990s comedy design. Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean stands on a palm-lined Hollywood boulevard, apparently struggling to carry an enormous white letter “B”, with the Hollywood sign visible in the background.

The Japanese campaign copy at the top announces:

「“ミスター・ビーン”ついに映画化!大ヒット、地球規模!」
“Mr. Bean finally becomes a movie! A global-scale hit!”

The central yellow line reads:

「ついに日本政府は、この男を入国させてしまった!」
“At last, the Japanese government has allowed this man into the country!”

The title 「ビーン」 appears in large red lettering at the bottom, with the English subtitle BEAN: THE ULTIMATE DISASTER MOVIE incorporated beneath. The design is bright, simple, and instantly comic — perfectly suited to the film’s absurd fish-out-of-water premise.

The lower section includes the Japanese distributor / campaign details, including GAGA-HUMAX branding and the period promotional website information, giving the poster a strong late-1990s Japanese release identity.
