“Bean” / 「ビーン」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1998, Rowan Atkinson / Mel Smith, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E276
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Bean / 「ビーン」, printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release in 1998.
Starring Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean and directed by Mel Smith, the film brought the internationally popular television character to the big screen in a broad transatlantic comedy of manners, chaos, museums, mistaken identity, and escalating disaster.
Film background
Bean follows the famously awkward Mr. Bean as he is sent from Britain to Los Angeles, where he is mistaken for an important art expert and entrusted with helping supervise the unveiling of a major painting. As expected, his presence produces catastrophe at every turn.
The film expanded the Mr. Bean character from television sketch comedy into a full theatrical feature, relying on Atkinson’s extraordinary physical timing, facial expression, and near-silent comic precision.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster uses a highly direct, comic close-up of Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean, his face filling almost the entire sheet. The design is framed by a bold red border, with the enormous English title BEAN printed across the top in matching red.
The Japanese campaign copy reads:
「ついに日本政府は、この男を入国させてしまった!」
“At last, the Japanese government has allowed this man into the country!”
This line perfectly captures the Japanese campaign’s tone: treating Mr. Bean himself as a comic international incident.
At the bottom, the Japanese title 「ビーン」 appears in large red lettering, with additional promotional copy referencing the film’s international success. The Festival UK 98 logo appears at upper right, while the lower credits include GAGA-HUMAX and Japanese release information.
The result is a simple but extremely effective comedy poster: one face, one title, one joke — instantly recognisable and highly displayable.
