“Being John Malkovich” (マルコヴィッチの穴), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2000, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O515
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2000 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Being John Malkovich (マルコヴィッチの穴), directed by Spike Jonze and distributed in Japan by Asmik Ace. The film is Jonze’s feature‑length directorial debut, from an acclaimed screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, and follows a down‑on‑his‑luck puppeteer who discovers a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich. The movie became a critical sensation worldwide, earning three major Academy Award nominations including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Film background
Set in a skewed version of late‑1990s New York, the story centres on puppeteer Craig Schwartz, his animal‑obsessed wife Lotte and his manipulative co‑worker Maxine. When Craig takes a filing job on the bizarre “7½th floor” of an office building, he finds a hidden tunnel that allows anyone to experience 15 minutes inside John Malkovich’s consciousness before being spat out beside the New Jersey Turnpike. The trio begin selling tickets to this impossible experience, setting off a darkly comic chain of identity swaps, romantic obsession and metaphysical body‑snatching that explores fame, desire and the fluidity of self.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 focuses on the portal concept with an elegantly minimalist composition. A large teal‑blue silhouette of a bald head—clearly evoking Malkovich—is seen in profile, filling almost the entire sheet. Carved into the side of the head is a small door standing ajar, through which three of the film’s main characters crouch in a stark white corridor, peering out nervously at the viewer. Above the doorway, the playful handwritten tagline 「入ってみる?」 (“Want to go in?”) curves across the darkness. The wide lower band carries the bold white and orange title 「マルコヴィッチの穴」 with the English logo BEING JOHN MALKOVICH beneath, flanked by simple icon‑style diagrams that illustrate the process of entering the tunnel and emerging after 15 minutes—an amusing visual summary of the film’s high‑concept premise. Awards copy across the top highlights the film’s Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, underlining its prestige as well as its eccentricity.
