Sale price $425.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1960 for the first Japanese release of Black Orpheus (黒いオルフェ / Orfeu Negro), Marcel Camus’s celebrated romantic drama inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and set during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Winner of both the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Black Orpheus remains one of the most internationally admired films of the late 1950s, renowned for its colour, movement, music, and tragic lyricism.

Film background
Directed by Marcel Camus, Black Orpheus reimagines the Orpheus myth in the streets, hills, and Carnival rhythms of Rio de Janeiro. The film stars Breno Mello as Orfeu and Marpessa Dawn as Eurydice, transforming one of the great tragic love stories of the ancient world into a modern, sun-drenched tale of passion, fate, music, and loss.

The film was especially important in bringing Brazilian music to a wider international audience. Its soundtrack, featuring music associated with Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá, helped introduce audiences around the world to the sounds of samba and bossa nova. The film’s atmosphere — part romance, part myth, part Carnival spectacle — made it a defining work of international art cinema.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 features breathtaking artwork by the celebrated Japanese illustrator Hisamitsu Noguchi, whose bold, theatrical style gives the film a particularly striking Japanese visual identity.

Against a deep black background, the central image shows Orfeu carrying Eurydice in an ecstatic dance-like embrace, their costumes rendered in vivid yellow, blue, and white. Around them, scattered coloured dots evoke the rhythm, music, and spectacle of Carnival, while the dramatic black ground gives the image a heightened, almost mythic quality.

At the top, the Japanese copy reads:

「爆発するサンバのリズム!灼熱の太陽のもと命をかけた永遠の恋!」
“The exploding rhythm of samba! An eternal love risked beneath the burning sun!”

The poster also proudly announces the film’s major awards:

「米アカデミー外国映画賞受賞」
“Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film”

「カンヌ映画祭グランプリ受賞」
“Winner at the Cannes Film Festival”

The lower section is dominated by the enormous yellow Japanese title 黒いオルフェ, one of the most visually powerful title treatments among Japanese posters for international art films of this period. At lower right, the French title ORFEU NEGRO and the Towa distribution mark appear, confirming the Japanese release presentation.

The result is a superb country-of-release design: romantic, rhythmic, graphic, and unmistakably of its era.
