"Black Orpheus" (黒いオルフェ), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1960, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O393
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1960 for Marcel Camus’s Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro). An intellectually daring reimagining of the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the film relocates the story to the turbulence and euphoria of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. Audiences and critics were captivated; it won the 1959 Cannes Palme d’Or and the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie overflows with dazzling costumes and a legendary bossa nova soundtrack by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá.
Design
Breathtaking artwork by the celebrated Japanese illustrator Hisamitsu Noguchi: Orfeu strides across a midnight field of Carnival confetti, cradling Eurydice, his golden sandals and tunic glowing against the jet-black ground. The dynamic yellow title 「黒いオルフェ」 sits boldly at the base beside the TOWA diamond, with ORFEU NEGRO and credits integrated into the layout—a perfect fusion of mythic romance and samba energy.
