This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Chaplin Cavalcade, a compilation celebrating the silent comedy of Charlie Chaplin, presented in Japan by Towa. Its brilliant yellow background and beautifully illustrated portrait capture the humour, elegance and expressive physicality of one of cinema’s most recognisable figures.

Film background
The compilation brings Chaplin’s early screen comedy to a later generation of cinema audiences, celebrating the inventive visual storytelling and mixture of laughter and pathos that established his international reputation.

A particularly interesting Japanese detail is the printed credit 「説明 牧野周一」—“Narration: Shuichi Makino.” This connects the presentation to Japan’s tradition of benshi, the performers who accompanied silent films with spoken narration. Chaplin is prominently credited as director, writer and star, with collaborators including Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell named below.

Poster design
A large painted illustration shows Chaplin raising one leg and touching the brim of his bowler hat, his curved cane held upright. His wide-eyed expression, oversized shoes, patterned waistcoat and red buttonhole flower give the portrait warmth and character.

Fine white lines radiate towards small stars across the golden-yellow background, suggesting the movement and theatrical sparkle of his performance. The enormous Japanese title combines scarlet and deep purple lettering, while Chaplin Cavalcade appears in flowing red script at the lower left, above the Towa branding.

The illustration bears the printed signature “Noboru” beside Chaplin’s shoe and is attributed to Noboru Ochiai (落合登). The uncluttered composition gives the figure exceptional presence—a joyful piece of Japanese poster illustration.
