“Die Hard” (ダイ・ハード), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1989, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA410

Sale price $170.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed for the first Japanese theatrical release of Die Hard (ダイ・ハード), John McTiernan’s landmark 1988 action film produced by 20th Century Fox and starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, and Bonnie Bedelia. Original Japanese posters for the film are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable in excellent / near mint condition.

Film background
Based on Roderick Thorp’s novel Nothing Lasts Forever, the film follows New York cop John McClane, who visits his estranged wife Holly at her company’s Los Angeles Christmas party in the high-tech Nakatomi Plaza. When a group of sophisticated thieves led by Hans Gruber seize the skyscraper and take the partygoers hostage, McClane becomes their only obstacle, battling the terrorists floor by floor with limited resources, bare feet, and plenty of wisecracks.

Die Hard redefined the modern action movie with its vulnerable, everyman hero and contained “tower under siege” structure, spawning a long-running franchise and countless imitators.

Poster design
The Japanese B2 intensifies the film’s high-rise chaos. Centred on the sheet is the vertical image of Nakatomi Plaza, engulfed in explosions and muzzle flashes as helicopters sweep in from the left and right. At the top, a large monochrome close-up of Bruce Willis as John McClane looks down over the inferno, while a sniper rifle and scope image overlaps the flames.

Along the bottom edge, smaller scenes show McClane barefoot with machine gun, the hostages cowering, and Hans Gruber and his gang in tense standoffs. Bold red Japanese copy across the top announces that an L.A. high-tech skyscraper has become a battlefield, while the huge title 「ダイ・ハード」 in bright red katakana dominates the lower third, with the English logo DIE HARD tucked beneath.
