“Django” (続・荒野の用心棒), Original Japanese Speed Poster 1966, Towa First Release, Speed Size (c.26 × 75 cm) O96

Sale price $235.00

This is an original Japanese speed poster printed in 1966 for the first domestic theatrical release of Django (続・荒野の用心棒), distributed by Towa. This scarce, small-format speed sheet is rare and very collectible.

Film background
Directed and co-written by Sergio Corbucci, Django stars Franco Nero (his breakthrough role) with Loredana Nusciak, José Bódalo, Ángel Álvarez, and Eduardo Fajardo. A Union-soldier-turned-drifter and his companion—a mixed-race prostitute—are drawn into a brutal feud between Confederate Red Shirts and Mexican revolutionaries. Made to rival the success of Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars, Corbucci’s film—like Leone’s—is often viewed as a loose, unofficial reworking of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo. Notorious for its violence, it was denied a UK certificate until 1993 (rated 18, later reduced to 15 in 2004). A commercial hit, Django became a cult cornerstone of the spaghetti-western genre, praised for Corbucci’s direction, Nero’s iconic performance, and Luis Bacalov’s score. The “Django” name spawned 30-plus opportunistic (mostly unofficial) follow-ups; the only official sequel with Corbucci’s involvement is Django Strikes Again (1987). Nero later cameoed in Quentin Tarantino’s homage Django Unchained (2012). Retrospectively, critics group Django with The Great Silence and The Specialists as Corbucci’s “Mud and Blood” trilogy.

Poster design
A striking tall tate composition: a huge close-up of Django’s eyes looms over a battlefield collage—coffin in tow—while a magenta silhouette of the gunman strides behind jagged brush-stroke kanji for 「続・荒野の用心棒」. “DJANGO” appears in Roman lettering near the lower centre, with the Towa diamond confirming domestic distribution. As issued for speed posters of the period, the reverse is printed with extensive Japanese program notes and stills.
