“Donkey Skin / Peau d’Âne” (ロバと王女), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1971, Catherine Deneuve / Jacques Demy, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T107
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1971 first Japanese release of Donkey Skin, released locally as ロバと王女 (The Donkey and the Princess). Distributed by C.I.C., Jacques Demy’s musical fantasy opened in Japanese cinemas on 7 August 1971, following its French release in 1970.
Adapted from Charles Perrault’s fairy tale, the film reunites Demy with Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand. Deneuve plays both the Queen and the Princess, supported by Jean Marais, Delphine Seyrig and Jacques Perrin. The story follows a princess who escapes an unwanted royal marriage, concealing herself beneath a donkey skin before finding refuge—and the possibility of love—in another kingdom. Its enchanted forests, extraordinary dresses and colourful royal courts create a distinctive world of music, humour and fantasy.
The Japanese design centres on a large portrait of Deneuve in a golden-yellow gown and tall, jewelled crown. Her thoughtful expression provides a quiet focal point against the woodland setting, where pale shafts of light fall through the trees and ferns. The warm gold of her costume contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greens.
A broad emerald-green border encloses the photograph, separated from it by a fine white frame with rounded lower corners. Across the top, oversized pink Japanese title lettering gives the poster an immediately recognisable identity. This combination of green, pink and gold makes an especially appealing accompaniment to Demy’s imaginative use of colour.
At the lower right, a rounded photographic inset introduces the Prince on a striking red horse, his scarlet costume echoing the animal’s colouring. Just above it, the French title “Peau d’Âne” appears in decorative pink-and-white lettering. The compact inset adds a glimpse of the film’s theatrical spectacle while allowing Deneuve’s portrait to remain dominant.
The Japanese promotional text reads:
「かぐわしいメルヘンの森に めぐり逢う若い恋人たち ドヌーブがくりひろげる 愛のファンタジイ」
“Young lovers meet in a fragrant fairy-tale forest—a fantasy of love brought to life by Deneuve.”
A beautiful piece for collectors of Catherine Deneuve, Jacques Demy, Michel Legrand and French musical cinema.
