“The Lost World” (失われた世界 / The Lost World), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1960, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P290
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1960 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Lost World, Irwin Allen’s colourful fantasy adventure loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1912 novel. Produced, directed, and co-written by Irwin Allen, the film stars Claude Rains, Michael Rennie, Jill St. John, David Hedison, and Fernando Lamas, and was released in Japan by 20th Century Fox.
Film background
Released in 1960, The Lost World follows Professor Challenger and a small expedition travelling into South America to verify the existence of a remote plateau where prehistoric life still survives. True to its period, the film throws everything into the mix: dinosaurs, giant spiders, hostile tribes, dangerous landscapes, and lost-world spectacle, all delivered in broad CinemaScope adventure style. It was shot in De Luxe Color and CinemaScope, and remains one of the key fantasy-adventure productions of the early 1960s. The film is also well known for its unusual creature effects, using live reptiles enhanced to suggest “dinosaurs,” which has helped give it a long cult afterlife among classic monster and adventure-film fans.
Poster design
This Japanese poster is a wonderful example of big-scale 1960s adventure marketing. The composition is packed with peril: a huge horned reptilian “dinosaur” lunges across the upper half, a terrified victim is lifted into the air, explorers advance through smoke and ruins with torches, and prehistoric beasts clash at the bottom of the sheet. At lower right, Michael Rennie is prominently featured with rifle in hand, anchoring the human drama amid the chaos. The huge red vertical Japanese title 失われた世界 gives the design tremendous wall impact, while the printed CinemaScope and 総天然色 callouts underline exactly how this film was sold to audiences: as a full-colour widescreen spectacle. The result is bold, pulpy, and extremely displayable.
