“Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan”, Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S10

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1993 for the first release of Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, released in Japan under the title Dragon Ball Z: Burn Up!! A Close, Intense, Super-Fierce Battle (ドラゴンボールZ 燃えつきろ!!熱戦・烈戦・超激戦).

Released theatrically as part of the 1993 Spring Toei Anime Fair, the film introduced Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan, one of the most famous and enduring characters created for the original Dragon Ball Z theatrical films. This exceptionally vibrant B2 comes from the film’s original Japanese campaign and survives in remarkable Near Mint condition.

Film background

Released in Japan on 6 March 1993, the film follows Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Future Trunks, Krillin and the other Z Fighters after they encounter Paragus, a surviving Saiyan who invites Vegeta to rule a newly established Planet Vegeta.

Behind the apparent restoration of the Saiyan homeland lies a plan for revenge, centred upon Paragus’s extraordinarily powerful son Broly. When Broly’s suppressed memories of Goku are awakened, his enormous latent strength erupts and he transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan.

The film became one of the most popular entries in the original run of Dragon Ball Z theatrical features. Broly’s overwhelming power, distinctive design and tragic backstory made him an immediate fan favourite, eventually leading to further films and, decades later, a major reinterpretation of the character within Dragon Ball Super.

The movie was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, with the original Dragon Ball manga and characters created by Akira Toriyama.

Poster design

This Japanese B2 is an explosive, colour-saturated composition characteristic of early-1990s Dragon Ball theatrical advertising.

The design layers multiple characters across a series of dynamically angled panels, giving the poster the visual rhythm of a manga page or animated action sequence.

At upper right, Super Saiyan Gohan launches forward in his purple gi, while Future Trunks charges through the upper-left section. Below them, Super Saiyan Vegeta and Piccolo are shown in attack poses, surrounding the enormous central image of Broly, whose face dominates the composition.

Goku is represented through the huge background portrait, establishing the confrontation between the established Saiyan hero and the newly introduced Legendary Super Saiyan.

Smaller figures including Krillin, Master Roshi, and Oolong bring a lighter comic counterpoint to the otherwise intense battle imagery.

Across the bottom appears the enormous:

“DRAGON BALL Z”

logo, rendered in vivid yellow, red and black against a brilliant blue field.

The Japanese subtitle beneath reads:

「燃えつきろ!! 熱戦・烈戦・超激戦」

Approximately:

“Burn Up!! A Close, Intense, Super-Fierce Battle!”

The highly exaggerated title perfectly reflects the film’s escalation of the franchise’s combat spectacle.

1993 Spring Toei Anime Fair

At upper right, the circular emblem reads:

「’93 春 東映アニメフェア」

“1993 Spring Toei Anime Fair.”

During this period, Toei regularly presented new animated features together as seasonal theatrical programmes, and this Broly film formed one of the centrepieces of the 1993 spring event.

At upper left appears:

「鳥山明 THE WORLD 2」
“Akira Toriyama: The World 2”

highlighting the film’s connection to the broader universe of Akira Toriyama’s creations and the enormous cultural popularity surrounding his work at the height of Dragon Ball Z.

The red vertical campaign copy reads:

「伝説の超サイヤ人!遂に現わる!! 悟空は“伝説”を超えるか。」

Approximately:

“The Legendary Super Saiyan finally appears!! Can Goku surpass the legend?”

This is particularly significant in retrospect: Broly’s first appearance is the central selling point of the poster, documenting the theatrical debut of a character who would become one of the franchise’s most recognisable antagonists.

Cultural significance

The first Broly film occupies a particularly important place in Dragon Ball collecting.

Broly became one of the defining characters created outside the original manga storyline, inspiring sequels, video games, figures, trading cards and an enormous global fan following. His eventual reinvention in Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018 further cemented the character’s position within the wider franchise.

An original Japanese theatrical poster from Broly’s very first appearance in 1993 therefore has considerable significance for collectors of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, Japanese animation and 1990s popular culture.

The poster’s visual appeal is equally strong: saturated primary colours, densely layered character artwork, early-1990s Toei typography and the enormous Broly portrait make it an immediately recognisable piece of vintage anime advertising.
