“Du Soleil Plein les Yeux” / 「さらば夏の日」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1970, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — ZA916

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1970 for the Japanese release of Du Soleil Plein les Yeux / 「さらば夏の日」, the French romantic drama released internationally as Du Soleil Plein les Yeux (“Eyes Full of Sun”).

A beautifully atmospheric example of 1970s French romantic cinema marketing, this poster has tremendous decorative appeal, combining soft Mediterranean imagery with elegant photographic montage. For collectors of French cinema, vintage romance posters, and refined Japanese poster design, it is an especially attractive and evocative piece.

Film background
Directed and co-written by Michel Boisrond, the film reunites key creative talent associated with the success of La Leçon Particulière (released in Japan as 個人教授). Set against a radiant Mediterranean backdrop, the story follows a young doctor, Vincent, who sets sail with his girlfriend Geneviève and his younger brother Bernard. Their summer voyage is disrupted by the arrival of Monika, whose presence introduces a new emotional tension and transforms the trip into a bittersweet study of youth, desire, and fleeting love.

The film stars Renaud Verley, Florence Lafuma, Bernard Le Coq, and Janet Agren, with music by Francis Lai, whose score lends the picture an additional air of wistful romanticism.

Poster design
The design is elegant, luminous, and unmistakably continental in mood.

The composition is anchored by a shimmering golden sea stretching across the upper half of the image, with a lone sailboat silhouetted against the sunlit water. On the left, a large, softly rendered female profile fills the vertical field, lending the poster a dreamy, introspective tone. At the lower centre, a prominent mid-shot of Renaud Verley brings the emotional focus forward, while smaller inset imagery of figures aboard the yacht reinforces the film’s summer setting.

The blue Japanese copy over the water promotes the film in relation to the earlier success of La Leçon Particulière, reading in essence:

“That mood of love once again… a new charm from the creators of La Leçon Particulière.”

A second poetic passage evokes the film’s romantic melancholy:

“Dazzling in the light of summer, that love… piercing the heart. And yet now, it disappears beyond the waves—”

At the bottom, the title 「さらば夏の日」 is rendered in a large, expressive handwritten crimson script, one of the most memorable features of the design. Beneath it, a small image of a couple walking in shallow water adds a final note of tenderness and nostalgia.

Overall, it is a superbly composed and highly displayable poster, with a refined balance of romance, sunlight, and wistful atmosphere.

Condition
Excellent condition. The poster presents beautifully overall, with strong colour, clean imagery, and excellent display appeal.

There may be light, ordinary signs of age and handling consistent with an original theatrical poster from 1970, but overall it remains a highly attractive and well-preserved example.
