“Dumbo” (ダンボ), Ultra-Rare Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1954, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D77

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1954 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Walt Disney’s Dumbo, distributed by Daiei. An exceptionally charming piece of early Japanese Disney publicity, it combines beautiful character illustration, warm colours, and bold Japanese lettering. For collectors of vintage Disney posters, this is a holy-grail piece with wonderful display appeal.

Film background
Originally released in America in 1941, Dumbo was produced by Walt Disney, with Ben Sharpsteen serving as supervising director. Its story of a young circus elephant who discovers that his oversized ears allow him to fly remains one of Disney’s most moving celebrations of friendship, courage, and self-belief.

The film reached Japanese cinemas on 12 March 1954, with a specially produced Japanese soundtrack. This poster prominently advertises 「日本語発声版」—“Japanese-language version” in a turquoise panel, promising audiences dialogue and songs they could understand. The printed dubbing credits include Jack Cutting and music director Torirō Miki, while 「大映株式会社配給」 along the bottom identifies Daiei as the distributor.

Poster design
A delightful illustrated composition against a glowing orange-and-gold background. Dumbo sweeps across the upper left with his ears outstretched, carrying Timothy Mouse in his yellow hat. Below, a second, larger depiction shows the little elephant seated beside Timothy, his enormous ears folded over his head.

Between these two images, Casey Jr.’s circus train winds diagonally across the sheet, accompanied by storks, birds, and a baby giraffe descending by parachute. These small details reward close inspection and give the poster a playful, storybook quality.

The towering red 「ダンボ」 title dominates the right side, balanced by turquoise English lettering reading “Walt Disney’s Dumbo — Color by Technicolor.” The Japanese promotional copy also invokes Bambi, connecting this new arrival with a Disney favourite already familiar to Japanese audiences.

Condition
Excellent for its age. Previously folded and subsequently stored flat. Once framed, this poster will display beautifully.
