“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (E.T. ジ・エクストラ・テレストリアル), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1982, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K213
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for the first theatrical release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Steven Spielberg’s landmark science-fiction fantasy and one of the most beloved films in cinema history. Released in Japan by Universal / CIC, the film stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.
Original Japanese posters for E.T. are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable for its elegant cosmic design, pairing the film’s famous finger-touch image with a vast view of Earth from space.
Film background
Released in 1982, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial tells the story of Elliott, a lonely boy who discovers and befriends a stranded alien left behind on Earth. As government agents close in, Elliott and his siblings attempt to help E.T. return home.
The film became a worldwide phenomenon and remains one of Steven Spielberg’s defining achievements. Its emotional combination of childhood wonder, friendship, loneliness, science fiction, and family drama made it one of the great popular films of the 1980s, and its imagery has become deeply embedded in modern cinema culture.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is a beautifully restrained and atmospheric release design. Against a deep black starfield, E.T.’s glowing finger reaches toward Elliott’s hand, creating the film’s most iconic image of contact and trust. Below, the title E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL glows softly at the centre of the composition, while the curved blue edge of Earth rises from the lower half of the poster.
The Japanese copy reads:
「彼は E.T. 遥か300万光年の宇宙から、未知なる地球へ…そして、独りぼっちで恐怖におののいていた。」
roughly:
“He is E.T. From a universe three million light years away, to the unknown Earth… and there, alone, he trembled in fear.”
Unlike the more illustrative Japanese fantasy-cloud variant, this design is quieter and more cosmic, emphasising the scale of space and the emotional vulnerability of the character. The result is a highly displayable Japanese poster with exceptional balance, simplicity, and emotional force.
