Why this is a holy grail
Printed in 1955 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Elia Kazan’s East of Eden, which opened in Japan on 14 October 1955, this towering STB belongs among the rarest and most visually striking James Dean posters in any country. Based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, the film marked Dean’s first lead screen role, and Turner Classic Movies notes that it was also the only one of his three major films released during his lifetime. In Japan, the release clearly carried exceptional weight: allcinema records the first-release date, and its Blue Ribbon Awards listing records East of Eden as the Best Foreign Film winner for 1955.
Among James Dean posters, this is one of the most desirable combinations imaginable: first release, Japan, 1955, STB tatekan format, and a design unique to the Japanese campaign. STBs were produced in smaller quantities than standard posters and were made for prominent cinema display, which gives them a much lower survival rate; at nearly five feet tall, they were never ordinary advertising paper.
This example is further distinguished by its unusually thick paper stock for the format, giving it a notably more substantial feel than many surviving STBs and underscoring the prestige of the Japanese launch.
Design highlights
This is one of the most beautiful Japanese James Dean designs of the entire 1950s. The upper sheet is intimate and romantic: Dean, in close embrace with Julie Harris, fills the composition against a deep blue field, with pink, cream, and yellow typography arranged in bold vertical bands. The lower sheet changes register completely, shifting into a long, shadow-filled corridor scene of extraordinary psychological tension, dominated by huge acid-yellow title characters and piercing red copy. The result is both monumental and cinematic: tenderness above, menace below. It is a design of real intelligence and dramatic force, and unlike the standard Western campaigns, it feels unmistakably Japanese in conception.
Cultural impact
East of Eden was the film that made Dean a star. The Academy notes that he received a Best Actor nomination for his first lead film role, while SCREEN describes the performance as the one that propelled him into public consciousness; the magazine also notes that Dean’s films continue to be watched and loved in Japan more than sixty years after his death.
The film’s stature was immediate and lasting. It won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, played In Competition at Cannes where it received the Prix du film dramatique, and Jo Van Fleet won the Academy Award for Supporting Actress. The Library of Congress later selected the film for the National Film Registry in 2016. For collectors, that matters enormously: this poster represents not merely a famous title, but the moment James Dean became James Dean.
Condition
Excellent, and extraordinary for a complete, unrestored 1955 STB tatekan on heavier stock. The poster remains in its original two separate sections as issued, rather than being joined, backed, or over-restored. The upper sheet presents extremely well, with rich, unfaded colour and only light age and handling wear: a few shallow surface creases, most visible under close inspection in the blue background and around Dean’s forehead / hair area, plus very minor edge and corner wear. The lower sheet is similarly strong, showing slight softness and waviness to the upper border, a few tiny margin marks near the top edge, light scattered surface rubbing in the smoky upper area and darker fields, and gentle edge wear consistent with age and careful storage. No major tears, notable paper loss, or restoration. Overall, this is an exceptionally clean and highly presentable survivor for a first-release STB of this age and rarity. Please review the photos carefully, as they show the exact poster for sale.

About STB (Tatekan) posters
STBs are the tall Japanese cinema signboard format, measuring approximately 51 × 145 cm overall—roughly the height of two B2 posters stacked. They were produced in smaller quantities, used for prominent display in and around theatres, and survive in far smaller numbers than standard release posters. That rarity is a major part of their appeal today. This example remains complete in its original two-sheet configuration, exactly the way the format was issued.
