“Easy Rider” (イージーライダー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1969, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P132
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1969 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Easy Rider (イージー★ライダー), the counterculture landmark directed by Dennis Hopper and produced by and starring Peter Fonda, with Jack Nicholson in his breakout role. One of the defining films of the late 1960s, it captured the freedom, paranoia, and fracture-lines of America at the height of the era’s cultural upheaval.
Film background
Released in 1969, Easy Rider follows two bikers—Wyatt (“Captain America”) and Billy—riding from the American Southwest toward New Orleans, chasing an ideal of freedom that increasingly proves elusive. Along the way, they encounter communities, outsiders, and hostility, revealing the tensions beneath the myth of the open road. With its naturalistic performances, documentary-like road structure, and era-defining rock soundtrack, the film became a cultural touchstone and a catalyst for the rise of “New Hollywood.”
Poster design
An extraordinary Japanese graphic design that feels closer to avant-garde poster art than conventional film advertising. The sheet is dominated by a blazing field of orange, punctuated by monumental vertical bars and star motifs that evoke the American flag in abstract form. At right, a cross-hatched, silhouette-like portrait (evoking the biker iconography of the film) is layered with red stars—an image of both allure and unease. The small “easy rider” logotype sits quietly inside the composition, while the bold katakana title イージー★ライダー anchors the lower section with crisp late-’60s typography. It’s a striking, highly displayable design—and one of the most distinctive Japanese posters ever produced for a major American counterculture film.
