“ENDLESS LOVE” / 「エンドレス・ラブ」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1982, Franco Zeffirelli, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A289
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Endless Love, the 1981 romantic drama directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. Although the film debuted internationally in 1981, this poster was issued for its Japanese theatrical campaign in the New Year 1982 release window, as reflected in the printed copy on the design.
A highly appealing piece of early-1980s youth cinema memorabilia, this poster captures the film’s mixture of romantic intensity, youthful obsession, and polished international glamour, while also reflecting the Japanese market’s fascination with Brooke Shields at the height of her early fame.
Film background
Based on the novel by Scott Spencer, Endless Love tells the story of an all-consuming relationship between privileged teenager Jade Butterfield and David Axelrod, a romance whose emotional intensity and social consequences spiral into tragedy. The film remains one of the defining studio romances of its era, remembered for its sleek visual presentation, Zeffirelli’s melodramatic sensibility, and the enduring cultural afterlife of its title song.
It is also closely associated with the celebrated theme “Endless Love,” written by Lionel Richie and performed by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, one of the most iconic love songs of the decade. Original theatrical material for the film carries added resonance because of this broader musical legacy.
Poster design
The design is especially sophisticated and distinctive. The upper portion is dominated by a large high-contrast monochrome portrait of the two leads: Martin Hewitt appears in profile at left, while Brooke Shields faces outward, her direct gaze giving the composition its emotional center. The grainy, almost graphic quality of the image gives the poster a more stylized, editorial feel than many conventional romance posters of the period.
Across the lower section of the central image runs a repeating “endlesslove” text band, interrupted by one highlighted instance in pink and red, a subtle but highly effective graphic accent. At right are two inset colour stills bordered in pink: one showing Brooke Shields in a classroom scene, the other depicting the young couple before a dramatic blaze, hinting at the film’s more turbulent emotional register.
Below the main image appears the Japanese New Year release line:
“’82年新作 哀しくも、鮮やかな青春を贈ります。”
A campaign line that positions the film as a vivid yet sorrowful portrait of youth, very much in keeping with how Hollywood teen and young-adult dramas were marketed in Japan at the time.
The Japanese title 「エンドレス・ラブ」 is printed boldly across the bottom in a large purple stylized font, anchoring the composition with strong visual presence. The lower credits also highlight Brooke Shields, Martin Hewitt, director Franco Zeffirelli, and the film’s musical pedigree, while the distinctive Toho-Towa logo appears at the bottom.
