“Night Train” (夜行列車), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1963, Lucyna Winnicka / Leon Niemczyk, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T93

Sale price $350.00

This is a rare original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1963 first Japanese release of Night Train, originally titled Pociąg. Distributed in Japan by Shin Gaiei, this elegant design combines expressive monochrome imagery, unusually refined typography and a restrained palette of pink, red and purple.

Directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, the 1959 Polish film stars Lucyna Winnicka and Leon Niemczyk, with Zbigniew Cybulski in a supporting role. Two strangers find themselves sharing a sleeping compartment aboard an overnight train bound for the Baltic coast. Their uneasy encounter unfolds among passengers carrying their own anxieties and disappointments, while a police search for a murderer brings suspicion and collective aggression to the surface.

The film combines the tension of a thriller with a sensitive study of loneliness and fleeting human connection. Its confined setting, atmospheric photography and Andrzej Trzaskowski’s jazz score create a distinctive nocturnal mood. The Japanese credits highlight its Georges Méliès award at the 1959 Venice Film Festival and identify Kawalerowicz as the director of Mother Joan of the Angels.

The composition centres on an intimate close-up of two faces, reproduced in stark black against a pale background. Coarse textures and sweeping areas of dark hair give the image an almost charcoal-like appearance. The close cropping concentrates attention on expression and proximity, suggesting the emotional intensity of strangers brought together within a confined space.

At the upper left, THE NIGHT TRAIN is arranged across three lines in tall, slender serif lettering: black, coral red and purple respectively. Its precision contrasts with the rough texture of the central image, while generous open space gives the design a striking sense of restraint.

A pink vertical band cuts through the composition and ends among paired numbers from 13 to 20, suggesting railway compartment or berth numbering. Below, the Japanese title 「夜行列車」 appears in large black lettering, balanced by compact credits and the 新外映 distributor logo.

The promotional line along the bottom reads:

「さまざまな人間群像をリアルに描いた感動の珠玉篇!!」
“A moving cinematic gem, vividly portraying a cross-section of human lives!”

This is a distinctive example for collectors of Polish cinema, Jerzy Kawalerowicz, European arthouse films and Japanese graphic design of the 1960s. Its combination of intimate imagery and disciplined typography gives it considerable appeal as a framed work.
