“Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love” (さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト 愛の戦士たち), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1978, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA344
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1978 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love, the hugely influential feature‑length sequel to Space Battleship Yamato. The film was produced by Office Academy and Toei Doga (now Toei Animation) and released nationwide by Toei on August 5, 1978.
Film background
Set one year after the original series, the story introduces the White Comet Empire, a vast city‑sized fortress threatening to consume Earth. Captain Okita’s successors lead the resurrected battleship Yamato on a desperate, near‑suicidal mission into deep space to confront the invaders, guided only by a mysterious telepathic plea from the ethereal woman Teresa. The film’s surprisingly tragic climax, operatic tone and themes of sacrifice cemented Yamato’s status as a cornerstone of Japanese SF anime and helped ignite the late‑70s “anime boom.”
Poster design
The B2 design is pure space opera. The Yamato itself dominates the left side, knifing upward from a star‑strewn void, its massive triple engine exhaust rendered as blazing orange suns that seem to thrust right off the paper. At the upper right, soft‑focused portraits of Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori float like constellations, giving the sheet a romantic, melancholic edge. The swirling blue galaxy and the curve of a planet at the bottom reinforce the cosmic stakes, while the bold brush‑stroke title 「さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト」 and subtitle 「愛の戦士たち」 anchor the image in stark white and gold against deep space blue. It’s one of the definitive vintage Yamato posters.
