“Fitzcarraldo” (フィッツカラルド), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1982, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O535
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Fitzcarraldo (フィッツカラルド), Werner Herzog’s legendary adventure‑drama starring Klaus Kinski and Claudia Cardinale.
Film background
Inspired by real Peruvian rubber barons, the film follows Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, nicknamed Fitzcarraldo, an obsessed dreamer determined to build an opera house in the Amazonian city of Iquitos. To finance his vision he hatches an audacious scheme to haul a full‑size steamship over a steep jungle hill to reach an untouched rubber territory. Herzog famously staged this impossible feat for real, dragging a ship overland in the Peruvian jungle, a production chronicled in Les Blank’s documentary Burden of Dreams. Fitzcarraldo has since become a touchstone of art‑house cinema and a symbol of filmmaking madness and ambition.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 captures one of the film’s most haunting images: Fitzcarraldo, dressed in immaculate white and seen from behind, staring up at his steamship as it lies impossibly beached on a muddy slope amid fallen trees. The steep diagonal of the riverbank and the looming hull emphasise the scale of his obsession. Vertical red Japanese copy along the right reads roughly “Let your wings, dreams, [and] humanity fly”, transforming the scene into a poetic metaphor. The title 「フィッツカラルド」 runs vertically on the left, while credits and the original German title FITZCARRALDO line the bottom, accompanied by the 映倫 mark. It’s a powerful, minimalist design that perfectly expresses the film’s blend of madness and grandeur.
