“Fort Yuma Gold (さいはての用心棒)”, Original First‑Release Japanese STB Tatekan 1969, Rare, STB Size (c. 51 × 145 cm / 20 × 57 in) O406
This is an original Japanese STB (tatekan) theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release in 1969 of Giorgio Ferroni’s Spaghetti Western Fort Yuma Gold (Per pochi dollari ancora), distributed domestically by Tōwa / 東和. Japan opened the film on February 11, 1969; the country title was 「さいはての用心棒」 (Saihate no Yōjinbō, literally “Bodyguard at the far reaches”).
Translations of the on‑poster Japanese (highlights you’ll see on this sheet):
-
「さいはての用心棒」 — the Japanese release title.
-
Star/credits stack: ジュリアーノ・ジェンマ (Giuliano Gemma), ソフィー・ドーミエ (Sophie Daumier), ジャック・セルナス (Jacques Sernas), ダン・ヴァディス (Dan Vadis). Director credit appears as カルヴィン・J・パジェット (Calvin J. Padget — Ferroni’s export pseudonym). Music: エンニオ・モリコーネ/ジャンニ・フェリオ (Ennio Morricone / Gianni Ferrio).
-
Process line typical of the campaign: 「テクニカラー/テクニスコープ」 (Technicolor / Techniscope).
-
Distributor mark: 東和 (Tōwa).
Design notes:
A striking, tall two‑panel composition made for street frames and theater façades: the towering red brush‑style title runs vertically through an action montage of desert gunfights and cavalry skirmishes, with a large portrait of Giuliano Gemma anchoring the design. Period exhibition copy touts color widescreen (Technicolor/Techniscope), while the Tōwa credit cements this as the 1969 first‑issue Japanese campaign.
Ferroni’s film (shot in Spain with an international cast) pairs Gemma’s athletic gunslinger with a rousing score credited to Morricone and Ferrio—a combination beloved by Macaroni‑Western collectors. The Japanese market retitled it Saihate no Yōjinbō, joining the country’s line of stylish late‑’60s Western imports.
It is 56+ years old!
Condition: Excellent for the type. Colors vivid; paper strong. Please see photos—this is the exact poster you will receive.
About the format: the STB (tatekan) is Japan’s tall, mini‑billboard poster (approx. 51 × 145 cm), printed in far smaller numbers than standard B2s and used outdoors and in transit hubs—hence its scarcity today.
Certificate of Authenticity included.
