“Gekkō Kamen / Moonlight Mask” (月光仮面), Vintage Japanese “Shōnen Shashin News” Educational Wall Poster 1981, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P218
This is an original Japanese B2 “Shōnen Shashin News” (少年写真ニュース) educational wall poster—Issue No.873, published 18 February 1981 by Shōnen Shashin Shimbunsha (少年写真新聞社). Created for classroom / school display, it uses the iconic hero Gekkō Kamen (月光仮面) to explain “how movies are made”, combining behind-the-scenes stunt photography, equipment breakdowns, and clear educational captions aimed at younger readers.
About Shōnen Shashin News (少年写真ニュース)
Shōnen Shashin News was a long-running Japanese photo-news teaching aid designed specifically for schools—large-format sheets meant to be posted on classroom walls (and typically replaced frequently, which is why surviving examples are increasingly scarce). The publication schedule was commonly three issues per month (8th / 18th / 28th)—and this sheet is explicitly marked as a combined issue for the 18th & 28th.
Gekkō Kamen context
Gekkō Kamen (“Moonlight Mask”) is one of the foundational icons of Japanese popular culture—an early superhero phenomenon that helped define the look and vocabulary of later tokusatsu heroes. This 1981 issue lands right in the period of the 1981 theatrical film revival of 月光仮面, released in Japan on 14 March 1981, making the timing of this educational “movie-making” feature especially appropriate.
Poster design
A fantastic, information-dense layout that feels halfway between a magazine spread and a theatre lobby display—scaled up to B2 wall-poster impact. The headline copy reads 「不正とたたかう勇気を教える」 (“teaches the courage to fight injustice”) and 「正義の味方 月光仮面」 (“ally of justice: Gekkō Kamen”), followed by 「映画はこうしてつくられる」 (“this is how movies are made”). The sheet then dives into production spectacle: dynamic stills of Moonlight Mask on his signature motorcycle, stunt sequences (including jumps and landings), and a terrific annotated technical diagram breaking down the bike’s gadgets and filming methods—pure Showa-era edutainment and a brilliant display piece for tokusatsu and design collectors.
