“Ghost” (ゴースト/ニューヨークの幻), Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA760
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1990 for the first Japanese release of Ghost, the enormously successful romantic fantasy drama directed by Jerry Zucker and starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tony Goldwyn.
One of the defining mainstream hits of the early 1990s, Ghost became a major international phenomenon, and Japanese posters for the film are especially sought after for their distinctive local title treatment and elegant, emotionally charged design.
Film background
Released in 1990, Ghost tells the story of Sam Wheat, a banker who is murdered during what appears to be a street mugging, only to remain on earth as a spirit in order to protect his girlfriend Molly from the danger that still surrounds her. Unable to communicate directly, he turns to the reluctant psychic Oda Mae Brown, leading to one of the most memorable blends of romance, fantasy, suspense, and popular comedy in modern Hollywood cinema.
The film was an extraordinary commercial and critical success. It became the highest-grossing film of 1990 worldwide and was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for Whoopi Goldberg and Best Original Screenplay. Its enduring cultural legacy, combined with the star power of Swayze and Moore, has made it one of the signature studio films of its era.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 design is visually striking and highly evocative. The upper half is dominated by a large, ethereal blue-toned image of Sam and Molly in embrace, rendered almost like a spiritual apparition or fading memory. This ghostly romantic image sets the emotional tone of the sheet immediately.
Below, the illuminated Manhattan skyline stretches across the composition, prominently featuring the World Trade Center towers, anchoring the film very specifically in New York and reinforcing the Japanese subtitle 「ニューヨークの幻」 (“Phantom of New York” / “Illusion of New York”).
In the lower-left foreground appears a full-colour close-up of Demi Moore, her expression tearful and unsettled, adding a note of human grief and emotional immediacy. The contrast between the cold spectral imagery above and her vivid portrait below gives the design a particularly strong visual rhythm.
The gold vertical text on the right reads:
「マンハッタンに星が流れた夜―不思議な愛のファンタジー・ドラマは始まった…」
“The night a star shot across Manhattan—a mysterious love fantasy drama began…”
The red vertical text on the left promotes the film’s American box-office triumph, declaring it a major smash hit that surpassed Die Hard 2 as the season’s top performer.
At the bottom, the Japanese title 「ゴースト ニューヨークの幻」 is printed in a soft pink and white font, an attractive contrast to the darker cityscape and a particularly elegant piece of Japanese release typography.
