“Ghost World” (ゴーストワールド), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 2001, Thora Birch / Scarlett Johansson / Terry Zwigoff, Rare B1 Size (73 × 103 cm) BAK-A

Sale price $650.00

This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster produced for the 2001 first Japanese release of Ghost World, distributed by Asmik Ace Entertainment. Directed by Terry Zwigoff and adapted from Daniel Clowes’ acclaimed comic, the film stars Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, and Steve Buscemi. Its distinctive combination of deadpan humour, outsider style, and understated melancholy has made it an enduring favourite of independent cinema.

Film background

Released in 2001, Ghost World follows Enid and Rebecca, two friends navigating the uncertain period after high school. Their shared cynicism gradually gives way to different ambitions, while Enid develops an unexpected friendship with Seymour, a solitary record collector played by Steve Buscemi.

Adapted for the screen by Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff, the film explores friendship, loneliness, identity, and the pressure to conform, preserving the distinctive tone of Clowes’ original work. Its screenplay received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Featuring memorable early performances from Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson, alongside supporting appearances by Brad Renfro and Illeana Douglas, the film remains closely associated with alternative comics, independent music, and the visual culture of the early 2000s.

Poster design

This Japanese B1 features a strikingly restrained composition, placing Enid and Rebecca together against an expansive white background. Their direct expressions and contrasting outfits become the focus, capturing the film’s dry humour and sense of social detachment.

Enid’s blue hair, thick-framed glasses, “RAPTOR” dinosaur T-shirt, green checked skirt, and black boots provide a concentrated burst of colour. Beside her, Rebecca wears a simpler green top and black skirt, creating a visual connection between the two characters while retaining their individual identities.

At the top, the Japanese tagline reads:

「ダメに生きる」

Which translates loosely as:

“Living as a misfit.”

The title treatment is particularly effective. 「ゴーストワールド」 stretches across the lower section in bold lettering that shifts from green to blue, echoing the colours of the central photograph.

Beneath it, the Japanese promotional line reads:

「全米ティーンエイジャーのバイブル、完全映画化!ここに等身大の青春がある。」

Which translates approximately as:

“The bible of American teenagers, brought to the screen! Here is youth portrayed true to life.”

The English GHOST WORLD logo and theatrical credits complete the lower section. At approximately 73 × 103 cm, the B1 format gives the design twice the surface area of a standard Japanese B2 poster, lending considerable presence to its generous use of empty space.

Collector significance

This original Japanese release poster brings together independent cinema, alternative comics, and distinctive early-2000s fashion. Its large B1 format and memorable central image make it particularly appealing to collectors of Ghost World, Daniel Clowes, Terry Zwigoff, and the early careers of Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson.
