“Godzilla – King of the Monsters” (ゴジラ), Original Japanese Promotional Character Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm)
This is an original Japanese B2‑size promotional poster produced by Toho for Godzilla (ゴジラ), billed here with the classic English epithet “King of the Monsters.” Rather than advertising a single film, this piece serves as a character profile for the Heisei‑era Godzilla introduced in The Return of Godzilla (1984) and carried through the late‑’80s and ’90s series, where the monster’s official height was updated to 80 metres and weight to 50,000 tons. The “King of the Monsters” title itself goes back to the 1956 American re‑edit Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, which helped launch the creature to worldwide fame and has remained closely associated with the character ever since.
Background
Created by Toho in 1954, Godzilla grew from a one‑off allegory of nuclear devastation into the central figure of a long‑running franchise and one of the most recognisable movie monsters in the world.
After a nine‑year break following the 1975 film Terror of Mechagodzilla, Toho rebooted the series with The Return of Godzilla (1984), inaugurating what is now known as the Heisei era of Godzilla films. This run portrayed Godzilla once again as an overwhelming, near‑unstoppable force of nature, with a heavier, more imposing suit design and updated size stats—exactly the incarnation captured on this poster.
Poster design
The design is wonderfully simple and bold: an extreme close‑up of Godzilla’s head and upper torso looms against a muted, storm‑grey sky, emphasizing the creature’s rough, charcoal‑like skin texture, jagged teeth and watchful amber eye. Printed on subtly textured paper with a semi‑sheen finish, the surface catches the light in a way that enhances the sense of scaly hide. To the upper left runs the vertical English title “KING OF THE MONSTERS – GODZILLA”, with the “GODZILLA” logotype rendered in metallic gold and the “O” picked out in vivid red. Beside it, a column of English text lists Godzilla’s “vital statistics”:
-
Height 80.0m
-
Weight 50,000t
-
Length of tail 108.0m
-
Bust, waist and hip measurements
-
Character: “very violent”
-
Nationality: Japanese
-
Cruising speed: 60 km/h on land, 45 knots in the water
At the lower edge a small Toho/character rights logo reinforces that this is an officially licensed studio promotional piece, intended for use in cinemas or retail environments to market the Godzilla brand itself rather than any single movie. The overall effect is that of an oversized trading card or kaiju field guide—a perfect statement piece for Godzilla collectors.
