“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” / 「招かれざる客」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1967, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1063

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner / 「招かれざる客」, the groundbreaking American comedy-drama directed and produced by Stanley Kramer and starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, and Katharine Houghton.

One of the defining social dramas of late-1960s American cinema, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner addresses interracial marriage, liberal idealism, and generational conflict with unusual grace and intelligence. This Japanese poster is especially attractive, with a warm sunset palette, elegant figural composition, and a refined design characteristic of the period.

Film background
Released in 1967, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner follows a young white woman who returns to her parents’ San Francisco home with her Black fiancé, a brilliant and highly accomplished doctor, intending to announce their engagement. Over the course of a single day, the couple’s arrival forces both families to confront their principles, prejudices, and assumptions about love, race, and marriage.

The film was directed and produced by Stanley Kramer, from a screenplay by William Rose. Its principal cast includes Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, and Katharine Houghton.

The film was both a critical and commercial success, appearing at a pivotal cultural moment during the Civil Rights era. It received ten Academy Award nominations and won Best Actress for Katharine Hepburn and Best Original Screenplay for William Rose. It is also especially significant as the final screen appearance of Spencer Tracy and the last on-screen pairing of Tracy and Hepburn.

Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a warm and elegant composition set against an orange-toned sunset view of San Francisco, with the Golden Gate Bridge visible in the distance. At centre, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Houghton walk arm-in-arm, smiling, presented as an attractive and confident young couple.

At upper right, two inset portraits feature Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, representing the older generation whose response shapes the emotional and moral core of the film. The overall effect is poised and inviting, while subtly underscoring the central family dynamic.

The principal Japanese tagline at the top reads:

「道けわしくとも 求めあい 確かめあい 愛を きょうの幸せを この胸に抱きしめて いつまでも…」
“Though the path may be difficult, seeking one another, confirming one another, embracing love and today’s happiness within this heart, forever…”

The lower portion is dominated by the large, elegant Japanese title 「招かれざる客」, rendered in a pale gold style with accompanying furigana. Beneath it appears the original English title guess who’s coming to dinner in blue lowercase lettering. At lower right, the cast and production credits are printed in clean yellow text, giving the poster a balanced and highly legible finish.

The overall design is warm, thoughtful, and highly evocative of late-1960s Japanese poster art for prestigious imported American films.
