“He Got Game” / 「ラストゲーム」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1998, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA956

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for He Got Game, released in Japan under the title 「ラストゲーム」 / Last Game. Directed, written, and produced by Spike Lee, the film stars Denzel Washington, Ray Allen, Milla Jovovich, and Rosario Dawson.

A powerful Japanese release poster for one of Spike Lee’s major late-1990s films, this design combines sports-drama intensity with a warm, atmospheric colour palette and a striking central image of Denzel Washington.

Film background
Released in 1998, He Got Game follows Jake Shuttlesworth, a prison inmate temporarily released for one week by the state governor. His task is to convince his estranged son Jesus Shuttlesworth, the top high-school basketball prospect in America, to sign with the governor’s preferred college. If he succeeds, Jake may receive a reduced prison sentence.

Directed by Spike Lee, the film is both a basketball drama and a study of fatherhood, exploitation, ambition, and broken family bonds. Real-life NBA star Ray Allen made his acting debut as Jesus Shuttlesworth, while Denzel Washington delivers a forceful and emotionally complex performance as Jake.

The film also features music by Aaron Copland and Public Enemy, giving it a distinctive soundscape that bridges classical Americana with contemporary political hip-hop.

Poster design
The Japanese poster is dominated by a large, soft-focus portrait of Denzel Washington, shirtless and holding a basketball, set against a warm purple, orange, and gold background. His expression is intense and watchful, immediately establishing the film’s themes of pressure, regret, and confrontation.

Across the top, the poster announces:

「全米初登場NO.1!」
“No. 1 on its U.S. opening!”

The central Japanese tagline reads:

「失われた絆は、最後のゲームでよみがえる。」
“The bonds that were lost will be revived in the final game.”

The title 「ラストゲーム」 appears in large, graphic black katakana across the centre, with Denzel Washington’s name printed above it. To the left is the signature phrase “a spike lee joint”, tying the poster directly to Lee’s authorial identity.

Along the lower section are three small film stills, with faint letters spelling GAME across them. These images introduce the film’s supporting world, including Milla Jovovich and Ray Allen, while reinforcing the poster’s basketball and family-drama themes.

The overall design is moody, elegant, and emotionally direct, with a strong 1990s Japanese arthouse / urban-drama sensibility.
