“House” (ハウス), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1977, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P282
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1977 for the first Japanese theatrical release of House (ハウス), Nobuhiko Ōbayashi’s wildly inventive Japanese surreal horror classic. The film stars Kimiko Ikegami alongside an ensemble cast of young actresses and remains one of the most original and visually explosive works in all of 1970s Japanese cinema.
Film background
Released in 1977, House is one of the most famous cult films in Japanese cinema—an unclassifiable collision of horror, comedy, pop-art editing, fantasy, and experimental visual effects. The story follows a group of schoolgirls who travel to a rural house that becomes a supernatural trap, devouring them through a succession of bizarre, dreamlike set-pieces. Over time, the film’s fearless visual language—hyper-saturated colour, handmade optical effects, surreal compositing, and a rhythm that feels almost musical—has made it a global cult favourite and a defining work of Japanese genre filmmaking.
Poster design
This original-release B2 design is entirely different from the better-known cat-and-house imagery most collectors associate with the film, making it a particularly striking and highly displayable variant. The composition is built as a dramatic collage of film stills, arranged in sharp red panels: terrified schoolgirls, candlelit interiors, occult imagery, the haunted house under a burning sky, and other moments of escalating nightmare all combine to capture the film’s manic atmosphere. Dominating the lower section is the enormous green ハウス title set against a blazing red title block, paired with the hand-drawn House logo and dense original Japanese billing. The result is pure late-1970s Japanese design—bold, lurid, cinematic, and instantly recognisable—perfectly reflecting the film’s psychedelic, candy-coloured terror.
