Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1965 for the first Japanese release of Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (ふるえて眠れ), Robert Aldrich’s celebrated psychological suspense thriller starring Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead, Cecil Kellaway, Victor Buono, and Mary Astor.

A major Southern Gothic thriller of the 1960s, the film is widely regarded as a companion piece to Aldrich’s earlier What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, again using psychological tension, Gothic atmosphere, family secrets, and the commanding presence of Bette Davis to extraordinary effect.

Film background
Set around a decades-old murder mystery in Louisiana, Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte follows Charlotte Hollis, a reclusive woman haunted by scandal, trauma, and the possibility that her past may not be what it seems. As relatives, doctors, and interested parties gather around her, the story becomes a tightly wound study of fear, manipulation, madness, and buried violence.

The film is especially notable for its rich Southern Gothic atmosphere, its elaborate suspense structure, and the powerful contrast between Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a superbly theatrical thriller layout. The upper portion is dominated by the anxious faces of Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland, divided by stark white vertical bars that suggest imprisonment, secrecy, and psychological entrapment.

At right, the yellow vertical copy reads:

「白い館には血しぶきが似合います 暗い檜の木陰に子守唄がすゝり泣きます……」

A natural rendering is:

“Blood spatter suits the white mansion; in the dark shade of the cypress trees, a lullaby sobs quietly…”

The Japanese title ふるえて眠れ is printed in sweeping purple and red lettering across the centre, while the original English title “HUSH…HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE” appears at the lower left. Additional imagery shows a woman in distress on a staircase and a figure looming in the background, reinforcing the film’s atmosphere of domestic horror and Gothic suspense.
