“Kids Return” (キッズ・リターン), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q221

Sale price $175.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1996 for the first domestic release of Kids Return / キッズ・リターン, written and directed by Takeshi Kitano / 北野武.

One of Kitano’s most acclaimed and emotionally resonant films, Kids Return follows two high-school dropouts and best friends, Masaru and Shinji, as their lives begin to move in very different directions. One is drawn toward the yakuza world, while the other discovers a talent for boxing. What begins as a portrait of youthful restlessness becomes a deeply affecting meditation on friendship, failure, resilience, and the uncertainty of adulthood.

The film was especially significant in Kitano’s career. Following his serious motorcycle accident in 1994, Kids Return marked his return to filmmaking and revealed a more reflective, humanist side of his cinema. With music by Joe Hisaishi, the film remains one of Kitano’s most beloved works.

The poster features a beautifully restrained, sepia-toned design, showing the two young protagonists seated closely together, their expressions quiet and uncertain. The composition is soft, minimal, and melancholy, perfectly matching the film’s bittersweet tone.

Two vertical Japanese lines frame the central image:

「これで終わったわけじゃないですよね」
“It’s not over for us, is it?”

「まだ始まっちゃいねぇよ」
“We haven’t even started yet.”

These lines are among the most memorable in Kitano’s filmography, capturing the emotional heart of the film: the fear of failure, and the fragile hope that life may still be beginning.

The title Kids Return appears across the lower centre in expressive blue brush-style lettering, with the Japanese katakana title キッズ・リターン printed beneath in orange. The poster also notes the film’s selection for the 1996 Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight.

About the film
Kids Return stars Ken Kaneko and Masanobu Ando, with supporting appearances by Leo Morimoto, Mitsuko Baisho, Ren Osugi, and others. It is widely regarded as one of Kitano’s finest films, balancing humour, sadness, and emotional restraint with extraordinary clarity.

Unlike the harder-edged yakuza works that established Kitano internationally, Kids Return is a quieter coming-of-age film, but no less powerful. Its themes of missed chances, friendship, ambition, and renewal continue to resonate strongly with audiences and collectors.
