“Kiki’s Delivery Service” (魔女の宅急便), Original Japanese “Vocal Album” Promotional Poster 1989, Studio Ghibli / Animage Records, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q208
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster produced in 1989 for the Kiki’s Delivery Service Vocal Album (魔女の宅急便 ヴォーカル・アルバム), released by Animage Records. This is not a standard theatrical poster, but a genuine vintage Japanese music promotional poster issued for retail display around the time of the film’s original release.
Original Japanese promotional posters for Kiki’s Delivery Service are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable because it features one of the most beautiful and atmospheric Kiki artworks: the beloved “Kiki on Ladder” / herb storage room design, showing Kiki reading quietly with Jiji behind her.
Film / album background
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released by Studio Ghibli in 1989, Kiki’s Delivery Service follows Kiki, a young witch-in-training, as she leaves home to live independently in a seaside city and begins working as a flying delivery girl. Gentle, funny, emotionally sincere, and deeply observant about growing up, the film remains one of Miyazaki’s most cherished works.
This poster was produced to promote the Vocal Album associated with the film, issued by Animage Records. Promotional record-store posters such as this were generally used for short-term display and were not ordinary commercial posters, making surviving examples especially difficult to find in strong condition.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly atmospheric promotional design. Kiki sits barefoot on a wooden ladder inside her mother’s herb and potion room, reading from a large open book while Jiji watches quietly from the shelf behind her. The scene is filled with remarkable background detail: hanging herbs, dried flowers, glass jars, botanical specimens, cattails, potion-room tools, and soft natural textures.
The palette is warm, muted, and deeply charming, giving the poster a magical handmade quality that perfectly captures the gentler side of Kiki’s Delivery Service. The composition feels intimate and domestic rather than theatrical: instead of showing flight or action, it presents Kiki in a private moment of learning, reflection, and quiet independence.
The vertical Japanese text on the right reads:
「おちこんだりもしたけれど、私はげんきです。」
“I’ve had some rough times, but I’m doing okay.”
This is one of the most famous and beloved lines associated with Kiki’s Delivery Service, perfectly expressing the film’s themes of independence, homesickness, burnout, recovery, and finding one’s confidence again.
The Animage Records logo appears at the upper left, confirming this as a music-related promotional poster rather than a standard cinema poster.
Rarity and significance
This is an extremely rare original Japanese promotional B2 poster. Because it was created specifically to promote the 1989 Animage Records Vocal Album, it was intended as a retail display item rather than a general-sale poster. Many examples would have been displayed, handled, removed, or discarded after the promotion period.
For collectors of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Japanese anime music ephemera, this is one of the most desirable Kiki-related promotional designs: rare, beautifully illustrated, emotionally resonant, and strongly connected to the film’s original 1989 release period.
