“Last Tango in Paris” (ラストタンゴ・イン・パリ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1973, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O508
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed around 1973 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Last Tango in Paris (ラストタンゴ・イン・パリ), Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 Italian–French drama starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider.
Film background
Last Tango in Paris follows Paul, a middle‑aged American in Paris grieving his wife’s suicide, and Jeanne, a young French woman he meets while scouting an apartment. The pair begin an anonymous, emotionally volatile sexual relationship that exists only within the walls of the empty flat. Bertolucci’s film shocked censors and audiences worldwide with its explicit intimacy and raw depiction of grief and desire, sparking debate over whether it was art or obscenity while also earning Academy Award nominations for Brando and Bertolucci.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 leans into the film’s hazy, fever‑dream quality. The entire sheet is bathed in warm amber and gold, with Paul and Jeanne’s nude figures rendered as soft, grainy silhouettes locked in an embrace, their forms almost dissolving into the background. There are no hard edges or intrusive design elements—just a wash of color that feels like steam, memory, or the afterglow of a moment that can’t last. At the bottom right, the English title Last Tango in Paris appears in bold, hand‑drawn red script, while Japanese copy and credits run along the lower band, including the local title ラストタンゴ・イン・パリ and adults‑only rating. The minimalist layout mirrors the film’s focus on two people sealed off from the world, making this one of the most elegant and evocative posters of the 1970s.
