“Le dîner de cons / The Dinner Game” (奇人たちの晩餐会), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1999, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O534
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1999 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Le dîner de cons (奇人たちの晩餐会), Francis Veber’s acclaimed French comedy distributed in Japan by Art Cap.
Film background
Released in France in 1998, the film centres on Parisian publisher Pierre Brochant, who hosts a weekly “idiots’ dinner” where guests bring along the most foolish person they can find to be secretly mocked. His chosen invitee, mild‑mannered tax official François Pignon, turns out to be a walking catastrophe whose well‑meaning blunders upend Brochant’s life over the course of one night. The film was a major hit, winning multiple César Awards including Best Screenplay and acting prizes, and has since become a modern French comedy classic.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 retains the stylish French graphic design, with the credits and cast names forming a series of horizontal pastel bars that gradually reveal a man’s face—almost like slices of the same “idiot” being dissected by the film’s snobbish hosts. Soft orange and blue tones create a warm, slightly retro palette, while the lower third is dominated by the bold blue French title “le dîner de cons”. Along the orange bottom border, the Japanese title 「奇人たちの晩餐会」 appears beside festival and award mentions, bridging French and Japanese audiences. The overall effect is sophisticated yet playful, reflecting the film’s blend of sharp wit and farce.
