“Le Pacha” / 「パリ大捜査網」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA712
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1968 for the first Japanese release of Le Pacha / 「パリ大捜査網」, the superb French crime thriller directed by Georges Lautner and starring Jean Gabin, Dany Carrel, André Pousse, Jean Gaven, and Louis Seigner.
A major late-period vehicle for Jean Gabin, Le Pacha is widely admired as one of the defining French policiers of the late 1960s: hard-boiled, stylish, and steeped in urban fatalism. The Japanese release title, 「パリ大捜査網」 (“Paris Dragnet”), perfectly captures the film’s tone of relentless pursuit and metropolitan menace. This example is especially attractive for its bold graphic design and strong visual impact, and it is increasingly difficult to find in collectible condition.
Film background
Released in 1968, Le Pacha follows veteran police commissioner Joss Gosselin, a seasoned and unsentimental investigator drawn into a fierce personal pursuit after the murder of a close associate. What begins as an official investigation becomes an increasingly ruthless campaign through the Paris underworld, as Gosselin closes in on a gang tied to a major gold-heist conspiracy.
Directed by Georges Lautner, the film stands as one of the essential French crime pictures of its period. It combines Gabin’s immense screen authority with taut procedural momentum and a distinctly late-1960s atmosphere of cynicism, violence, and cool urban modernity. The film is also especially noted for its music by Serge Gainsbourg, whose contribution has become part of the picture’s enduring cultural identity.
Poster design
The design is striking and instantly memorable. Dominating the left side is a large white profile silhouette of Jean Gabin, cut sharply against a dense black background formed from a street-map view of Paris. This graphic treatment gives the poster an almost pop-art severity while simultaneously evoking surveillance, pursuit, and the labyrinth of the modern city.
At centre-right sits a bold red target / crosshair device, within which smaller scene elements are arranged in compartments. One quadrant features Dany Carrel in a glamorous, suggestive pose inside a car; another presents a gunman aiming directly outward, heightening the sense of threat and confrontation. Elsewhere, blue falling silhouettes and dark human outlines punctuate the map background, reinforcing the film’s themes of crime, death, and the citywide dragnet.
The upper section carries the original French title LE PACHA in large, emphatic red block lettering, while the lower section is anchored by the Japanese release title 「パリ大捜査網」, rendered in a huge, angular red action font of remarkable graphic force. The result is an exceptionally strong and characterful period design: modern, aggressive, and unmistakably cinematic.
