“LIMELIGHT” (ライムライト), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1973, B1 Size (73 × 103 cm) — Towa 45th Anniversary
This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 1973 for the Japanese theatrical re-release of Limelight (ライムライト), issued by Towa as part of its 45th Anniversary “Viva! Chaplin” campaign.
Written, directed, produced, composed by, and starring Charles Chaplin, Limelight is among Chaplin’s most personal and emotionally resonant films. This large-format Japanese re-release poster celebrates the film not simply as a classic, but as a major work of cinema history, presented in a striking and highly sophisticated 1970s Japanese design.
Film background
Originally released in 1952, Limelight tells the story of Calvero, an ageing music-hall clown who rescues and encourages a young ballerina, Thereza, played by Claire Bloom. The film is deeply autobiographical in tone, exploring performance, memory, artistic decline, tenderness, and spiritual endurance.
It is also historically significant for featuring the legendary screen pairing of Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton, a meeting of two of the greatest figures in silent-era comedy. Their shared sequence remains one of the most celebrated moments in film history.
In Japan, Chaplin was admired not merely as a comic entertainer, but as a filmmaker of humanity, melancholy, lyricism, and moral depth. The 1973 Towa 45th Anniversary re-release reflects that reverence beautifully.
Poster design
This is an exceptionally attractive Japanese B1 re-release design, combining bold brush-style typography, pop-art halftone portraiture, and a richly layered narrative montage.
At the top, the title 「ライムライト」 appears in monumental hand-painted-style katakana, rendered in deep blue and teal with tremendous visual impact. Beneath it appears the English title LIMELIGHT, set in a soft pink serif, reinforcing the poster’s refined, cosmopolitan character.
At the centre stands Chaplin as Calvero, cane held behind his back, glancing over his shoulder in a pose that perfectly captures the film’s bittersweet atmosphere of dignity, theatrical memory, and quiet sorrow.
The design is enriched by large halftone colour fields in teal and magenta, giving the poster a distinctly 1970s Japanese graphic identity. Around the central figure are smaller montage images featuring Claire Bloom, Buster Keaton, theatrical scenes, and supporting film moments, all working together as a visual tribute to Chaplin’s artistry.
The top credit line reads:
「製作・脚本・監督・主演・作曲 チャールズ・チャップリン」
confirming Chaplin’s extraordinary creative control as producer, writer, director, star, and composer.
The vertical copy at right presents the film as a deeply moving story of beauty, love, music, and emotional grace, centring on the relationship between the ageing performer and the ballerina whose life he helps restore.
At the foot, the poster is clearly marked as a Towa 45th Anniversary commemorative release, an important detail that distinguishes this as a special Japanese re-release issue rather than a routine revival poster.
About the format
This poster is in the Japanese B1 format, measuring approximately 73 × 103 cm. B1 posters are substantially larger than standard Japanese B2 posters and were used for more prominent cinema display.
That larger scale is especially effective here, allowing the halftone portraiture, central Chaplin figure, Claire Bloom close-up, and supporting montage elements to breathe with superb visual clarity and gallery-like presence.
