“Madame Rosa” / “A Life Ahead” (これからの人生), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1978, Academy Award Winner, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) M131
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Madame Rosa (これからの人生 / La Vie devant soi), the acclaimed French drama directed by Moshé Mizrahi and starring Simone Signoret.
Released in Japan under the title これからの人生 — literally “The Life Ahead” — the film was promoted as a major award-winning European drama, with this Japanese poster prominently highlighting its 1978 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Film background
Based on the novel by Émile Ajar / Romain Gary, Madame Rosa tells the deeply human story of an elderly Jewish woman and former sex worker in Paris who cares for the children of prostitutes. At the centre of the film is her relationship with Momo, a young boy of Algerian background, whose bond with Madame Rosa becomes the emotional heart of the story.
The film is remembered for its tenderness, melancholy, and compassionate portrayal of marginal lives. Simone Signoret’s performance is central to its power, combining toughness, warmth, exhaustion, and quiet dignity.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a soft, emotionally direct photographic design. The main image shows Madame Rosa tenderly kissing Momo on the cheek, immediately emphasizing the maternal bond and emotional intimacy at the centre of the film.
At the top, the English phrase “a life ahead” appears in pink, echoing the Japanese release title rather than the more familiar English title Madame Rosa. Along the left side, a large Oscar statuette and vertical blue text announce:
「1978年度アカデミー賞 最優秀外国語映画賞受賞作品」
“1978 Academy Award Winner — Best Foreign Language Film.”
The right-side vertical copy reads:
「マダム・ローザ……2人っきりで行きましょう……あなたとボクの永遠の故郷へ」
A natural rendering is:
“Madame Rosa… let us go, just the two of us… to your and my eternal home.”
The lower half features a Parisian riverside scene with the Eiffel Tower, along with a small walking vignette of the film’s central pair. The large blue title これからの人生 anchors the composition with warmth and clarity.
The result is a beautiful Japanese presentation of a European art-house drama: restrained, humane, and emotionally resonant.
