This is an original Japanese double‑sided calendar poster printed in 1982 as a Fujicolor promotional item for Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム). Produced under licence from Sotsu Agency and Nippon Sunrise, it was issued as a non‑retail advertising piece for Fujifilm photo dealers, with January–June 1982 on one side and July–December 1982 on the reverse.

Series background
Mobile Suit Gundam debuted on Japanese television in 1979 and is widely credited with revolutionising robot anime by introducing the “real robot” approach—treating giant robots as military hardware piloted by ordinary soldiers rather than invincible super‑heroes. Set in Universal Century 0079, the series depicts the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, focusing on young civilian Amuro Ray and the prototype RX‑78‑2 Gundam he is forced to pilot aboard the warship White Base.

Initial ratings were modest, but reruns, model‑kit sales and a successful three‑film theatrical compilation (culminating in 1982’s Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space) turned the show into a phenomenon and launched the long‑running Gundam franchise.

Calendar design
The calendar’s vertical format (approximately 34 × 73 cm) makes it read very much like a theatrical poster while still providing a full year’s calendar at the bottom. On the mecha‑focused side, the RX‑78‑2 Gundam stands in the foreground with beam rifle and shield at the ready, backed by another Federation mobile suit and the massive White Base looming in orbit above a blue planet. The bold English logo MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM and Japanese title 「機動戦士ガンダム」 sit across the top, accompanied by the red Fujicolor mark. Along the lower band, a row of super‑deformed Zeon mobile suits—including Z’Gok, Zaku I, Char’s custom Gelgoog, Zock and Gogg, each labelled with its MSM/MS model number—marches above the calendar grids for January through June 1982, with Sundays and Japanese holidays highlighted in red.

The character side shifts the emphasis to the story’s cast. The upper section features dynamic space art: Char’s red Zaku and other Zeon suits drifting in zero‑G, the Gundam’s face framed in close‑up, and the White Base and support craft streaking across a cloud‑filled sky. The lower half presents a full‑length line‑up of the White Base crew and children—Amuro Ray at centre, flanked by figures such as Sayla Mass, Bright Noa, Frau Bow and the three kids—each identified in small Japanese captions. Beneath their feet run the calendar panels for July to December 1982, mirroring the layout of the first half of the year. Overall, the piece functions as both a vibrant celebration of First Gundam’s mecha and characters and a nostalgic snapshot of the early 1980s Gundam boom, with the Fujicolor branding tying it to its original life in camera shops and photo labs across Japan.
