“Modern Times” (モダン・タイムス), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1972, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) K260A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical re-release poster printed in 1972 for Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (モダン・タイムス), one of the most celebrated films in cinema history. Written, directed, produced, scored, and starring Charlie Chaplin, the film also stars Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Chester Conklin, and Tiny Sandford.
Film background
Originally released in 1936, Modern Times is one of Chaplin’s defining masterpieces and one of the final great works of the silent-screen tradition. The film follows the Tramp as he struggles through the pressures of factory labour, mechanisation, unemployment, poverty, and modern industrial life, while forming a tender bond with the Gamin, played by Paulette Goddard.
Blending comedy, social criticism, pathos, and visual invention, Modern Times remains one of the most important films of the twentieth century. Its famous factory-machine sequences, especially Chaplin caught in the giant gears, have become some of the most recognisable images in world cinema.
Poster design
A superb Japanese re-release design, dominated by the iconic image of Chaplin trapped among enormous industrial gears. The upper section uses a large black-and-white still of Chaplin sitting on a cog, visually capturing the film’s critique of mechanised labour and modern industrial rhythm.
Below, a montage of smaller scenes presents Chaplin in several of the film’s most memorable moments, including the Tramp with Paulette Goddard, comic crowd scenes, factory imagery, and performance vignettes. The English title MODERN TIMES appears within the central gear, while the large Japanese title モダン・タイムス is rendered across the lower section in bold riveted lettering, echoing the machinery and industrial design of the film itself.
The Japanese copy at lower left describes the film as an immortal masterpiece of world cinema, combining laughter with modern sadness and sharp human observation. The lower credits prominently identify Charles Chaplin as producer, writer, director, star, and composer, reinforcing the film’s extraordinary authorial significance.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for Charlie Chaplin re-releases are highly collectible, particularly examples from the early 1970s when classic cinema was being rediscovered by new generations of Japanese filmgoers. This B2 is especially appealing for its strong graphic use of the famous gear imagery, its elegant monochrome presentation, and its connection to one of Chaplin’s most important films.
For collectors of Charlie Chaplin, classic cinema, Japanese re-release posters, and early film history, this is a highly displayable and historically significant piece.
