“Crazy for Monroe!” (モンローに夢中!), Original Japanese Marilyn Monroe Film Festival Poster 1982, Artwork by Masakatsu Ogasawara, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O33
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for a Marilyn Monroe revival / film festival campaign in Japan, promoted under the title モンローに夢中! (“Crazy for Monroe!” / “Mad About Monroe!”).
Rather than advertising a single film, this striking country-of-release poster was produced to promote a special Monroe screening programme built around five of her most beloved titles, making it an especially appealing piece for collectors of Marilyn Monroe, classic Hollywood, and Japanese revival-cinema posters.
Film background
Issued in Japan in 1982, this poster promotes a Marilyn Monroe retrospective centred on five enduring screen classics:
- The Seven Year Itch (七年目の浮気)
- There’s No Business Like Show Business (ショウほど素敵な商売はない)
- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (紳士は金髪がお好き)
- How to Marry a Millionaire (百万長者と結婚する方法)
- River of No Return (帰らざる河)
By the early 1980s Monroe had long since become more than a Hollywood star: she had become a global icon of glamour, vulnerability, celebrity, and twentieth-century screen mythology. Japanese revival posters of this kind are highly collectible because they capture not only Monroe’s enduring appeal, but also the distinctly graphic and stylish way her image was reinterpreted for the Japanese market.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 features a beautiful large-scale portrait of Marilyn Monroe rendered in an airbrushed, hyper-romantic style by Masakatsu Ogasawara (小笠原正勝), a noted Japanese illustrator known for soft-focus, luminous commercial poster art.
The design is dominated by Monroe’s smiling face, with her platinum-blonde hair, red lips, and glittering earrings set against a cool blue background. The composition is both bold and elegant, balancing glamour and pop sensibility in a manner very characteristic of early-1980s Japanese design.
At left, the pink vertical copy reads in essence:
“Everything about her is lovely.
A sparkling blonde, an overflowing smile.
Eternal masterpieces shining on the big screen — discovered again now!”
Across the bottom, the large title band proclaims:
モンローに夢中!
“Crazy for Monroe!”
Below this, the copy マリリン魅惑のベスト5 (“Marilyn’s Fascinating Best 5”) introduces the five featured films, illustrated with a row of small scene stills. The result is a highly displayable, visually arresting festival poster that functions both as Monroe memorabilia and as a superb example of Japanese revival-poster design.
