“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O289A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1984 for the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark pre-Studio Ghibli masterpiece. Although it predates the formal founding of Studio Ghibli, the film is rightly regarded as one of the essential works in the wider Ghibli canon, and original 1984 Japanese posters for it remain among the most sought-after anime posters of the era.
Film background
Released in Japan on 11 March 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, adapted from his own manga, with music by Joe Hisaishi in the first of his great collaborations with Miyazaki. The film was animated by Topcraft for Tokuma Shoten and Hakuhodo, and distributed theatrically by Toei. The key Japanese voice cast includes Sumi Shimamoto, Gorō Naya, Yōji Matsuda, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Iemasa Kayumi. Set in a post-apocalyptic world poisoned by toxic jungles and haunted by giant insects, it follows Nausicaä, the young princess of the Valley of the Wind, as she is drawn into a struggle between humanity, war, and the natural world. It remains one of the foundational achievements of modern Japanese animation.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly recognisable original 1984 design. It shows Nausicaä standing in her blue outfit with Teto at her shoulder before the vast, husk-like form of an Ohmu, set against a mysterious, spore-filled forest backdrop. Above her, the glider sweeps into the frame, adding a sense of motion and scale, while the golden field at the bottom anchors the composition with a quiet, symbolic warmth. The design beautifully balances stillness and adventure, presenting Nausicaä not simply as an action heroine but as a figure of calm, intelligence, and spiritual connection to the lost world around her. It is one of the most elegant theatrical images produced for the film.
