“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Studio Ghibli Canon / Pre-Ghibli, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J7A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1984 for the first release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Although now regarded as part of the Studio Ghibli canon, the film predates the formal founding of Studio Ghibli and was produced by Tokuma Shoten / Hakuhodo, animated by Topcraft, and released in Japan by Toei.
Film background
Released in 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with music by Joe Hisaishi. The voice cast includes Sumi Shimamoto as Nausicaä, Gorō Naya, Yōji Matsuda, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Iemasa Kayumi.
Set in a poisoned post-apocalyptic world, the film follows Princess Nausicaä as she attempts to mediate between humanity, nature, and the catastrophic legacy of war. Its success directly paved the way for the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985, making it one of the most important works in the history of Japanese animation.
Poster design
A superb and highly dramatic first-release design, dominated by Nausicaä standing before the glowing form of an Ohmu, with key characters arranged below in a powerful ensemble composition. The huge NAUSICAÄ title stretches across the top in pale blue, giving the poster immediate graphic impact, while the darker red, orange, and purple tones create a more intense and epic atmosphere than many later Ghibli promotional designs.
This poster captures the film’s central themes with exceptional force: ecological crisis, ancient prophecy, war, compassion, and survival. The composition is both heroic and mysterious, making it one of the most desirable original Japanese posters for Miyazaki’s early career.
Authenticity
This point is important. Many later official and unofficial reproductions of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind posters circulate in the market, including Ghibli shop reprints and modern decorative copies. This example is an original Japanese theatrical B2 printing from the 1984 first-release campaign.
It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
