“Neon Genesis Evangelion / Tōji Suzuhara”, Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q70
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1996 for Neon Genesis Evangelion, featuring Tōji Suzuhara. Produced during the series’ original first wave of popularity, the poster is associated with SEGA and GAINAX / Project Eva, and belongs to the same important early promotional era that produced some of the most desirable Evangelion character posters.
Series background
First broadcast in 1995, Neon Genesis Evangelion rapidly became one of the defining anime series of its generation. Tōji Suzuhara is one of the most memorable supporting characters in the series: outspoken, physical, often comic on the surface, yet ultimately tied to some of the show’s most emotionally devastating developments. Because Evangelion’s cast is so psychologically distinct, character-specific promotional posters such as this have become especially collectible, particularly when they date from the franchise’s original mid-1990s campaign period.
Poster design
This is a clean, bold, and highly displayable design. Tōji is shown standing frontally with arms folded, wearing his dark athletic tracksuit, rendered against a pale lavender ground that gives the composition a calm and surprisingly elegant visual balance. The large NEON GENESIS EVANGELION masthead dominates the upper section, while “Toji Suzuhara” appears at top right. The SEGA logo at lower right and the printed illustration credit to Takeshi Honda further anchor the poster within Evangelion’s original promotional landscape.
Unlike more chaotic or action-heavy Evangelion imagery, this design relies on character presence and graphic simplicity. That restraint is part of its appeal. It captures Tōji’s confidence and attitude with remarkable economy, making it a strong standalone display piece even outside the context of a full poster set.
Rarity and significance
Because this poster was issued in 1996, it belongs to Evangelion’s original release era, which remains the most sought-after period for collectors. Early Japanese promotional posters tied to SEGA campaigns, home-video releases, or related merchandise were produced for limited circulation and were never standard mass-market retail items. As a result, surviving examples are increasingly difficult to find, especially in attractive condition.
Character posters of major Evangelion cast members are particularly appealing because they combine the franchise’s iconic branding with focused portrait-style artwork, and this Tōji example is an excellent representation of that format.
