“Platoon” / 「プラトーン」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1987, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA531
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1987 Japanese release of Platoon / 「プラトーン」, Oliver Stone’s landmark Vietnam War drama starring Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, and Keith David.
One of the defining American war films of the 1980s, Platoon remains a major cinematic statement on youth, violence, disillusionment, and moral collapse in war. This Japanese poster is especially powerful, combining the film’s most iconic image with bold Academy Award campaign graphics.
Film background
Originally released in 1986, Platoon follows Chris Taylor, a young American who leaves college to volunteer for service in Vietnam. Once deployed, he is drawn into the brutal reality of jungle warfare and into the moral conflict between two opposing sergeants: one compassionate and idealistic, the other ruthless and hardened by combat.
Written and directed by Oliver Stone, who drew heavily from his own experience as a U.S. infantryman in Vietnam, the film became a major critical and commercial success. It received eight Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
Poster design
The poster is dominated by the film’s unforgettable central image: a soldier in the jungle falling to his knees with both arms raised toward the sky. The composition is raw, anguished, and immediately recognizable, making it one of the most enduring visual symbols of Vietnam War cinema.
The top tagline reads:
「戦争で傷つくのは、いつも〈青春〉。」
“The thing that is always wounded by war is youth.”
The upper section prominently celebrates the film’s Academy Award success, with a gold Oscar statuette graphic and large Japanese text announcing:
「最優秀作品賞受賞」
“Winner of Best Picture”
as well as awards for Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Sound.
The lower section is anchored by the enormous red English title PLATOON, overlaid with the Japanese katakana title 「プラトーン」 in bright yellow. A pair of red military dog tags crosses the title, reinforcing the film’s themes of identity, death, and wartime sacrifice.
The overall design is severe, emotional, and highly effective, presenting the film as both an Oscar-winning prestige work and a devastating anti-war drama.
