Sale price $385.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1992 for Porco Rosso (紅の豚 / Kurenai no Buta), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film features the voices of Shūichirō Moriyama, Tokiko Kato, Akemi Okamura, and Akio Ōtsuka, with music by longtime Miyazaki collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

This particular poster is a highly appealing Animage Records promotional issue, connected to the film’s original 1992 release period. The lower-left corner carries the Animage Records mark and catalogue number TKCA-30596, while the lower-right corner bears the copyright line © NIBARIKI · TNNG / 1992. It is best understood as an original music/promotional poster rather than a standard Japanese theatrical cinema poster.

Film background

Released in 1992, Porco Rosso is one of Hayao Miyazaki’s most elegant and distinctive works. Set around the Adriatic Sea between the wars, the film follows Marco Pagot, a former World War I fighter ace mysteriously transformed into a pig, who lives as a bounty hunter pursuing air pirates across the Mediterranean.

The film combines aerial adventure, romantic melancholy, European interwar atmosphere, and Miyazaki’s enduring fascination with flight. Unlike many of Studio Ghibli’s more fantastical works, Porco Rosso has a particularly refined historical flavour, drawing on early aviation culture, seaplanes, Mediterranean settings, and the moral weariness of the post-war period. Today it is regarded as one of Miyazaki’s most sophisticated films, especially admired by collectors for its mature tone and unusually stylish visual identity.

Poster design

The design is striking and beautifully restrained. Against a broad cream ground, the poster presents Gina in a poised Art Deco-inspired composition, wearing a purple cloche-style hat and holding a vintage telephone. The image captures the film’s refined European atmosphere and its blend of romance, nostalgia, and aviation-era glamour.

The bold red Japanese title 紅の豚 appears at the top, followed by Italian text describing the world of aerial pirates and the story of the pig called Kurenai-no-Buta. This use of Italian text is especially fitting for the film’s Adriatic setting and gives the poster a distinctive period character quite separate from standard theatrical advertising designs.

The lower-left corner includes the Animage Records logo and catalogue number TKCA-30596, confirming the poster’s promotional association with the music release. The artwork is clean, elegant, and highly displayable, with a strong character focus and a quieter, more design-led sensibility than the film’s main theatrical posters.
