“Princess Mononoke – Video Release” (もののけ姫 ビデオ発売告知), Original Japanese Home Video Promotional Poster 1998, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O536
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 1998 to advertise the first VHS and Laserdisc release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫), part of the “Ghibli ga Ippai” home‑video collection. The video and Laserdisc editions were released in Japan on 26 June 1998, less than a year after the film’s record‑breaking theatrical run.
This poster is very hard to find even in Japan!
Film background
Originally released in Japanese cinemas in 1997, Princess Mononoke is an epic historical fantasy set in a mythic Muromachi‑era Japan, following exiled prince Ashitaka as he becomes entangled in a struggle between the forest gods and an iron‑producing human settlement. The film was hailed for its complex environmental themes and refusal to offer simple heroes and villains, and it became the highest‑grossing film in Japanese history at the time of its release, helping cement Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s global reputation.
Poster design
Unlike the more action‑oriented theatrical posters, this video‑release B2 opts for a quiet, atmospheric approach. A dense, moonlit forest fills the sheet, painted in deep greens and blues, with a single kodama (tree spirit) glowing softly on a branch near the top right—an immediately recognisable symbol from the film. Down the middle, pale green vertical text reads 「もののけ姫が家にくる。」—literally “Princess Mononoke is coming to your home,” a neat play on the shift from cinema to living room. The lower section features the red 「もののけ姫」 logo, the Studio Ghibli “Ghibli ga Ippai” collection mark, and bold white lettering announcing the 6月26日 video release date, along with pricing and details of an accompanying making‑of documentary set. It’s a beautifully understated piece that captures the film’s mystical tone while serving as a time‑capsule of late‑90s Ghibli collecting.
