“Red Beard” (赤ひげ / Akahige), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1969, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA339
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1969 for the re-release of Red Beard (赤ひげ / Akahige), Akira Kurosawa’s 1965 humanist epic produced and distributed in Japan by Toho.
Film background
Set in Edo-period Tokyo, the film follows idealistic young doctor Yasumoto, who is assigned to a poor clinic run by the rough‑mannered but deeply compassionate Dr. Niide, nicknamed “Red Beard” and played by Toshiro Mifune. Through a series of intertwined patient stories, Yasumoto gradually abandons his ambitions for prestige and learns the ethical responsibility of a physician. Now regarded as one of Kurosawa’s great works, Red Beard marks the final collaboration between Kurosawa and Mifune and is celebrated for its moving performances, rich period detail and deeply humane storytelling.
Poster design
This 1969 “New Print” (ニュープリント) B2 re-release poster features an intense close‑up of Mifune’s bearded face dominating the right side of the design, paired with a smaller portrait of Yasumoto at the lower left. Between them, montage stills show key emotional moments and the clinic’s patients, giving a sense of the film’s ensemble drama. The bold red calligraphic title 「赤ひげ」 streaks vertically down the left, balanced by cool blue credits typography and the Toho logo, creating a powerful contrast between the doctor’s fiery reputation and the film’s measured humanism.
